The #1 Secret to Success of a Young Adult

The #1 Secret to Success of a Young Adult

The secret to the success of a young adult is learning the difference between what they want NOW versus what they want MOST!

Right here lies the very essence of our work...it hits at the core of every child's likelihood for young life success. People are living in constant pursuit of satisfying the "now" moment with little thought given to its ramifications on goals and ambitions, those things wanted "most".

This directly leads to compromising a child's or family's longer-term goals or initiatives. The bigger picture becomes blurred in favor of immediate gratification. I'm not saying that we can't enjoy our life and indulge in fun, entertainment, and pleasure, because certainly we can and we need to! Believe me, I enjoy a bowl of ice cream as much as anyone. But I don't do it to the extent of compromising my overall good health and competitive spirit, which is something that I want most to maintain.

In working with families, I always begin by asking the child- "
What 3 things do you want most in your life."

Their response is the key to unlocking and sharing their deep inner-core beliefs and feelings...a rare thing for them to do. This does two unbelievably great things-

    1) It allows them access to their own inner feelings, which
     most often remains elusive otherwise.

    2) It gives me critical insight for knowing how to proceed ahead with them to ensure their desired outcomes.

    Why is this so important?

It serves to add a conscious awareness and attention to a person's difference between what they want now versus what they want most. Now we can let them have their fun, but not at the expense of future goals and ambitions. Therein lies the secret to success in a young adult! By the way, it applies to all of us, ha!!!

Essays- The Difference Between Very Good and Great

Essays- The Difference Between Very Good and Great

Acceptances are often secured with a very good or great essay. Denials are easily reached with poor essays.
When it comes to college application essays, very good essays are by far the exception, whereas mediocre, boring, and meaningless essays make up the vast majority.

Very good essays have 6 things in common, they...
    1. Have a Title capturing a reader's interest
    2. Begin with a date and point of time-reference
    3. Begin with a personal story
    4. Relate significant meaning of the writer
    5. Flow well to the conclusion
    6. Are written with a flair for vivid description
"Very good" is the minimum standard for my student's essays, while "great" is the expectation. The inside secret for making a college application essay "great" is for it to have a "timeless" message of the writer embedded into its meaning. This is a message of the writer that will last for the writer in its meaning for many years to come. That's what makes essays great!

5 Biggest Admissions & Application Mistakes

5 Biggest Admissions & Application Mistakes

Common mistakes made by student-families lead to predictable results.

Year after year students completing their Junior year fall upon the college admission and application process unprepared and seemingly without concern as they plan ahead for summer.

But there should be plenty of concern as they step upon the front porch of College Admissions with acceptances, scholarships,  family-finance and young lives at stake...all too easily put to risk and left to chance by unsuspecting families.

    Here are the
Top 5 Most Common Mistakes made by student-families during the Admissions Process-
    1. Students remain a Stealth Applicant, unknown to the people making the decisions
    2. Their Essay, lacking interest and genuine meaning, gets submitted without proper guidance or oversight
    3. The Common App is submitted with glaring holes of incomplete and obviously rushed information
    4. Applications are submitted late without a strategy for securing affordable, quality options
    5. Students hit the "Submit" button without a plan for constant and consistent follow-up and follow-through
    The predictable results...
    • Application denials and lost opportunity
    • Less scholarships and broken finances
    • Upset children and family anxiety
    • Fewer options and wrong college choices
Parents are not excluded from this. You can't defer this job onto your child or others. You will be the one to pay the college bill and have final responsibility for making the right choice. You need to be involved and you should know more about what you're about to buyCOLLEGE. Your child's college outcome reflects upon your preparation, or lack thereof.

We've made it easy for you to be well-prepared...no excuses!

Athlete-Families, this is your biggest mistake!

Athlete-Families, this is your biggest mistake!

Dreams can come true provided you avoid making the same repeated mistakes as those made before you!

Everyone is familiar with the term- The Learning Curve.

We learn from our prior mistakes and we have the opportunity to learn from other people's prior mistakes. And if we're entering uncharted territory, then we're on our own to navigate it.

The interesting thing about the college process is that most families treat it as uncharted territory. And while it may be uncharted to them, it is not uncharted territory. In fact, it is territory that is navigated by several million families each year with many lessons to learn and big mistakes to avoid!

In working with hundreds of athletes, we've identified 8 Common Mistakes that will derail your dreams of playing college sports. But for today, we are focusing on the one most common mistake of athlete-families. It is-
    • Athletes bypass the Admissions process in hopes that an interested college coach will take care of it for them, but the learning curve shows that rarely happens.
All college students must go through Admissions. All athletes must go through Athletics, but they also must go through Admissions. The college process for athlete-families is a dual-path process. It is a most common and costly mistake of athlete-families to avoid and bypass the Admissions Office.

Your job as a parent of an athlete pursuing college sports is to schedule college visits with plans to meet both the college coach and the admission counselor who may decide upon your child's application acceptance and scholarship award.

    We've created a
Student-athlete Portal designed to help you better navigate the college process. To get yours setup, click here and submit our 5-minute questionnaire.

You Want Success? Then Finish the Sentence...

You Want Success? Then Finish the Sentence...

The time-lapse for change, what use to take 20 - 30 years, now occurs in a mere 2 - 3 years.

As 2020 lurks on the horizon, most people struggle to keep up with the times. Why so? Because change occurs much faster now than ever before. Trends, things, and our way of life can transition in many ways in a matter of a few years.

This means that if you don't stay up with the changing times, then you quickly fall behind. Brands, images, products, services, achievements can all get old or wear off in a matter of months. We awake each day to this ongoing reality!

I often ask people to complete this sentence, so please do.

    To succeed in today's times...

I would like to hear your responses. Here's mine-

To succeed in today's times, your mind needs to progress at a speed faster than the speed of changing times.

This is my way of saying that it's everyone's job to get ahead in the game for winning at the end. It's our everyday work here!
