How Social Media Affects College Opportunity
You can't talk your way out of what you
behaved yourself into!
Years of hard work can be thrown away in a moments notice with a careless post on Facebook. It's as simple as that and it applies to college. Here's how-
Don't be mistaken about the college admissions and scholarship process.
Don't be fooled by what you think the obligations are of the college to carefully review and consider your child's application.
Don't think for a moment that your $75 application fee warrants their time and attention.
College admission counselors would like to find a reason within 5 minutes to reject or defer an application. They have 3 immediate sources-
1- they go straight to the GPA and SAT's/ ACT's
2- they go straight to the application essay
3- they go straight to Facebook
Each source is accessible within 5 minutes and each can by itself be cause for denial or deferral. In fact, over 40% of admission counselors recently surveyed indicated they immediately look at the student's Facebook.
A student's GPA and SAT/ ACT scores represent years of hard work. Their essay can represent hours of diligent work. A Facebook post can represent a moment of carelessness or irresponsibility. A student's real self can be exposed in social media. Once exposed, there is no talking their way out of it! And colleges will not risk their reputation on those students, big GPA or not.
