Right here lies the very essence of our work...it hits at the core of every child's likelihood for young life success. People are living in constant pursuit of satisfying the "now" moment with little thought given to its ramifications on goals and ambitions, those things wanted "most".
This directly leads to compromising a child's or family's longer-term goals or initiatives. The bigger picture becomes blurred in favor of immediate gratification. I'm not saying that we can't enjoy our life and indulge in fun, entertainment, and pleasure, because certainly we can and we need to! Believe me, I enjoy a bowl of ice cream as much as anyone. But I don't do it to the extent of compromising my overall good health and competitive spirit, which is something that I want most to maintain.
In working with families, I always begin by asking the child- "What 3 things do you want most in your life."
Their response is the key to unlocking and sharing their deep inner-core beliefs and feelings...a rare thing for them to do. This does two unbelievably great things-
1) It allows them access to their own inner feelings, which most often remains elusive otherwise.
2) It gives me critical insight for knowing how to proceed ahead with them to ensure their desired outcomes.
Why is this so important?
It serves to add a conscious awareness and attention to a person's difference between what they want now versus what they want most. Now we can let them have their fun, but not at the expense of future goals and ambitions. Therein lies the secret to success in a young adult! By the way, it applies to all of us, ha!!!
